Themes and Analysis
Several poignant themes span
"Hold Back":
1. Interracial Relationships: The film portrays societal prejudice and familial rejection, facing interracial couples. The love between Dorcy and Sabrina goes beyond a clenched tight mindset, finally revealing the difficulties in navigating this relationship that transgresses traditional racial confines.
2. Cultural and Religious Tensions: The relationship hints toward directions of interfaith tension between diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.
The resistance by Sabrina's Muslim family to her marrying a Christian man only goes on to accentuate the problems which almost always beset interfaith relationships due to fiesta and heat of cultural expectations.
3. Family Honor vs. Individual Desire: This conflict between personal happiness and taking up familial responsibilities reaches back to Sabrina's torn disposition in favor of Dorcy besides upholding her family's honor; Slimane stands on the side as he believes he brings to life family values by putting his foot down against that union.
4. Urban Multiculturalism: Based in Paris, the film paints the colors of the city's diverse citizens, an encounter in between communities.
